Pinhel

So much to discover, so much to experience

The municipality of Pinhel is located between Serra da Estrela and Serra da Marofa, 30 kilometers from the border with Spain. It extends over an area of 480 km2, has 18 parishes and around 8000 inhabitants.

Located on a hill, the city of Pinhel is 660m above sea level, on the left bank of the Côa river. Its origins date back to the Chalcolithic period, however, there are older remains in the municipality, namely cave paintings and engravings from the Côa Valley, in Cidadelhe.

The Castle of Pinhel, benefited during the period of D. Dinis and with a keep from the period of D. Manuel, is surrounded by a wall with around 800 meters in perimeter, which is possible to walk along the “Caminho de Ronda ”.

The 16th century houses, on Rua de Santa Maria, attest to the Jewish presence. Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, the manors, spread throughout the old town, stand out from the rest of the urban area due to their monumentality and decorative refinement.

All times of the year are recommended to visit Pinhel, however it is important to highlight the holding of events that represent an extra attraction.

The Traditions Fair (on the Carnival weekend), the Medieval Fair (on the first weekend of June), the City Festivals (in August), the Beira Interior – Vinhos & Sabores event (on the third weekend of November) and Pinhel de Natal (in December), are some of the highlights of a municipality that never stops.

The authenticity of local gastronomy combined with the excellence of Pinhel wines complete the itinerary for anyone visiting the hospitable Cidade Falcão. For longer stays, there are several accommodation options available, both in the city center and in various villages in the municipality, where rural and nature tourism enterprises have been complementing the offer of services necessary for those looking for tranquility and air. pure of this border territory.

It is all these attractions, simple but genuine, that lead Pinhel to assert itself as a municipality with “So much to Discover and So much to Live in”.

Here's the invitation.
